Bike Family

Enrollment for our next cohort is coming in 2024!

The Bike Family program equips people of all ages with the skills and resources they need to experience the joy of bicycling safely and with confidence so they can get to the places they need to go. Participants from community groups complete a bike safety class and receive bicycles and bike safety equipment. The program culminates in a community celebration bike event!

Bike Family was developed in 2018 to help more students, caregivers, and school staff experience the joy of biking while supporting schools to adopt practices and policies that help more people choose sustainable transportation. In five years, Bike Family has provided cycling safety classes and equipment to more than 300 children, parents, caregivers, and teachers across many Atlanta communities, helping to foster even stronger support and demand for safe streets for us all.

Who can participate?

The Bike Family program works with communities near Atlanta’s High-Injury Network to increase safety and biking in the neighborhoods where most of our city’s serious traffic injuries and fatalities occur. Over five years, we’ve partnered with neighborhood schools and YMCAs across many Atlanta communities. Participants are usually Atlanta Public Schools students and their caregivers; we release specific criteria ahead of each cohort.

How do we enroll?

Enrollment for our next cohort is coming in 2024!

How the program is structured

Class and Community Instructional Ride: Participants learn bicycling safety basics in a classroom learning atmosphere (two hours). They then receive bikes and safety gear and join our instructors for a 30-45-minute group ride (about one hour).
